Rock Kraft Course Descriptions & Schedule - COURSES & TRIPS
NOTE: You can book any course, guided climb, or trip at any available time. You are not limited to this schedule.
We are the only Guide Service & Climbing School located at Devils Tower with a Perfect Safety Record!

Rock kraft courses are two sessions long. However, you can elect to limit or focus course material to one session rather than the suggested two.

BASIC ROCK KRAFT
This is the first course in our series for those who wish to begin pursuing climbing seriously. Our local rock is ideal for introductory purposes. We'll concentrate on the theory as well as the practical components of rock kraft. You'll learn the fundamentals of knots, equipment, rope signals, belaying, rappelling, and rope handling techniques, as well as the class and grade system used to rate the difficulty of routes. From the start, we emphasize the development of your analytical judgment skills. Gain confidence as you become familiar with the variations of stance, balance, and the general principals of movement on rock. We'll guide you through hands-on experience with modern free climbing techniques on slabs, faces and cracks, then it's on to full-pitch climbs. A fun, educational experience for all outdoor enthusiasts. Cost

INTERMEDIATE ROCK KRAFT
An action-packed course for those who have acquired the basic skills. Refine the fundamentals while adding to your repertoire of techniques including multi-pitch succession. You'll learn more about anchors, from natural and artificial, to clean and destructive types. More sophisticated use of slings, additional knots and hitches, along with the mechanical belay are introduced in a consociated evolution of the "safety system". We highlight route finding skills with focus on the free climbing principals of application and rhythm. You'll encounter new challenging techniques such as safeguarding rappels, and begin learning to develop your own free climbing strategies. Objective and subjective hazard evaluation is stressed as we tackle multi-pitch climbs. Cost

LEADER SYMPOSIUM
Learning to lead is the most challenging step of your climbing career. Our two-day leader symposium is your opportunity to prepare yourself to meet the challenge responsibly. We'll go into extensive detail concerning various aspects of equipment use and the strategies employed in leading. Instruction will encompass advanced protection techniques and the use of slings and runners to minimize rope drag. We'll also deal directly with the subtle psychological aspects of the lead, enabling you to develop a personal strategy for optimizing every aspect of every pitch, from resting efficiently to utilizing the best protection features. We've developed some innovative methods to establish your confidence on the top end of the rope. Cost

WALL KRAFT
This course focuses on the techniques used in direct aid climbing. Learn how to test your gear placements confidently using a daisy chain and etriers. Practice stance and FIFI hook resting skills while developing efficient methodical movement technique. We'll explore gear racking, piton and copperhead placements, and hooking. You'll also learn how to pack your haul bag and haul it. Learning these techniques can help you put yourself in places you've dreamed of. Cost

SELF-RESCUE COURSE
Knowing when and how to back off a climb is an essential component of every good climber's repertoire. This two-day course is designed to prepare you to respond to minor emergencies on the rock without incurring needless risk to yourself, your partners, or your equipment. You'll learn self-sufficient skills and specific techniques for raising and lowering climbers (injured or otherwise) in various types of terrain. Everything from hung rappels to passing knots and rope extensions along with friction knots and hitches will be introduced and practiced in evacuation scenarios to develop independence and resourcefulness.

INTRODUCTION to ROCK CLIMBING
This course will teach you what Rock Climbing is all about. We begin with teaching you how the Climbing Safety System works and then we move on to letting you use it under our expert guidance. After learning a knot or two and few climbing signals, you will get to learn Basic Climbing Movement Skills to ascend several climbs. If you have always wanted to get a feel for what rock climbing is like, this is your course. It is taught daily during our normal operating season.

TOWER KRAFT
Our most popular course! This course is an overview and accelerated version of our basic and intermediate rock kraft courses, and is designed to bring inexperience climbers, those who have limited or no intermediate multi-pitch climbing experience, those who only have gym climbing experience, or those who would like a refresher up to the intermediate skill level needed to safely and enjoyably climb to and descend from the summit of Devils Tower with one of our highly skilled professional guides after two days of instruction rather than going through the four days required by taking both our basic and intermediate rock kraft courses. This two day course overviews basic rope handling, climbing signals, belaying, rappelling, and multi-pitched climbing safety system skills. It also covers face and crack climbing movement skills. Tower Kraft is not listed in the adjacent column of scheduled courses, nor is it designed to be a substitute for learning basic and intermediate rock kraft skills in depth. If you have solid Basic Rock Kraft Skills, but no multi-pitch traditional climbing experience, you only need to take the second day of this course to prepare for your summit climb of Devils Tower. Tower Kraft is can be scheduled at any appropriate available time, and it is usually taught daily during our normal operating season.
